Don't be fooled by the college bookstores. You don't always have to purchase what they're selling. Here are a couple of points to consider when you're deciding which textbook to buy:

  1. Is there an older edition? If so, consult with your professor. Science and technology books typically revise their editions every 3 years, but if you're taking an introductory course, the revisions may not be that significant.
  2. Check out book rental services such as Chegg.com. They offer book rentals for a fraction of the price offered at most college bookstores.
  3. Do you have friends that just took the class that you're about to take? Did you just complete a class that one of your pals is taking next semester? It never hurts to make friends with your classmates. Trading books with each other is a lot cheaper and easier than the anarchy that goes on in the bookstores.
  4. Check out online resources. I've posted several in the "Cheap Books" link at the top of the homepage.
